Impression, Celestia by Muffyn-Man Impression, Celestia by Muffyn-Man
Hey again to all my brony watchers and everyone who watches my MLP work regardless. I know that you've already seen a lot of my work before, but this one is probably one that I'm a tad bit conflicted over.

You see, when I created Luna's Starry Night [link] I was driven by personal comparisons between the subtle meanings behind Starry Night, Van Gogh's personal life, and Luna's nature to the MLP:FiM fandom. I took all of these into consideration and even constantly listened to fan-made songs about the princess when making it.

I felt proud of what I did with that piece, but I can't say the same thing for Celestia. In this I was trying to tie together "Celestia, the bringer of Light" with "Monet, the painter of Light" which fits in my mind as I can now understand how topics so positive and optimistic can still be so avant gard in contemporary society; in other words, Society's initial view of Monet during his contemporary life, compared to The Brony Fandom in our lives.
If you're head hurts a little, I do apologize.

All that aside, I do feel like my picture is severely lacking. That's why I waited over a month to upload it because I wanted a premium membership to activate critiques. Anyone who is still reading, I humbly ask for your honestly brutal critique on this. Is it perfect? Should I give this piece another shot? Am I doing something harmful by comparing a fictional cartoon character princess to one of the most prolific modern artists ever known? Did I even capture the magic that Monet expressed every time he touched paint to a canvas?

The description is impressive as well.
As seen in the background you did let it look like a dreamy outcome, which I like:D Highlighted the Canterlot Castle main attractions gives a good point of vieuw. Shiny and bright!

As for Princess Celestia, she looks wonderful, as Always, her look in her eye's you did choose very well:D Altough it isn't a MLP related style, it is a good piece of art though couse of the many details. Like her mane&tail which are curly beautifuly done! (no not like a van Gogh altough your other work suggest a hint, but a good attempt! carry on!) Nice face expression, like she is concerned.

The bright clear coloring is a treath for the eye! Sometimes there are too many effects and shades used which causes a to 'complicated or busy' picture. Yours shows a smooth and fluid shaped Celestia!

I don't know what you'll have in mind for the future in art. Just carry on and see what's happening. Please stay improving and well as a hobby I think you'll do fine:D
There are already enough 'bored' or 'rated' ppl on DA which I pitty,everyone/everypony does her/his best. If you're serious about art and creating, just do your best!

In all honesty, I actually love this piece. The entire idea of combining Celestia with Monet is wonderful, it shows a knowledge of art history that is not often seen when the main subject is something often considered so simple, like ponies.
I like how it feels as though Celestia and Canterlot shine off the page, as well as the golden shimmer off the buildings and the ground. The gradation in her mane between colors is exquisite, and I love how deep the colors get, rather than the customary pastel shades. All of the colors feel rich, and bright, which fits with the optimistic message.
The technique and detail is also gorgeous. It seems as though every part of this piece is careful and deliberate. If not for the description, I would have thought you would be beaming with pride for this piece, because it truly is great. I would say it's near perfect. To my eye, I cannot see anything that I would change, but perfection is never really something that happens. I would say you captured the same sort of magic that Monet had. Most truly great artists in their time, believe themselves failures, or are not satisfied with their pieces, but your idea was unique and interesting, and marvelously executed. I would love to see more pieces like this. :)

The color work it's self is fine and the hair actually looks like it's flowing because of it. I think you could have improved the positioning so the palace is super imposed above her. Like she is the wings of equestria's rule. Also make a brighter point below her, or something to focus her gaze on. Make the lower shadows on her body a bit darker. It was good not using line on the palace, gives it an ghostly almost dreamy appearance.

Thanks, been a while since I've gotten any kind of critique on her. Truth be told, I was pretty disappointed in how this came out too since it didn't follow the artistic connection and influence that I had planned out for it. I'm going to make another Celestia piece in little bit and you will probably understand what I mean when you see it. You were pretty right on the mark with this though, I didn't quite plan her out very well cause I was trying for an almost opposing mirror between her and Luna muffyn-man.deviantart.com/art/…

Well, this is it. The best art of Celestia I've yet to see. Congratulations. This was spectacular enough to get an audible gasp out of me when the picture loaded. Truly, a job more than well done.

Clearly you have mastered the art of Trolling, Sir. With all of the Celestia fanart that is birthed from out of the AEther, I find it hard to believe that this is the best you have seen. But then again, maybe you haven't seen too much fanart of her.

You're welcome man. Keep up the great work-just because it doesn't resemble the work of some famous artist doesn't by any means make it bad. Even if it didn't come out the way you hoped it would, it's still a gorgeous work of incredible talent. It's often said that an artist's greatest critic is themselves, and I know this for a fact to be true. Don't feel as if you've failed or something because you've still produced stunning art.

Well... There is, but its due to something other than if i made a pretty picture or not. I see it as flawed because I didn't depict her in the style that can be attributed to the artist whom I drew inspiration from. If I had not put down Monet in the description would you have recognized the connection?

Perhaps not, being that I barely heard of Monet beforehand, but still - Depsite it not being the carbon copy of your inspiration, it still has a touch of uniqueness every artist holds in their own way. I'm fascinated on how you did the hair, in all honesty.

Thank you for that.

Oh, regarding the hair is a style I've developed with any character I illustrate, I attempt to make her hair flow in ephemeral brush strokes. The idea was to subtly blend the different colors around each other while fading it with certain parts of the environment to make it almost illuminate.

I used a combination of Copic Markers and Acrylic Paint on Bristol Board for this if that helps too.

Beautiful piece to pair with the Luna one. :highfive: There are many emotions to explore with Celestia in her roles as big sister, wise teacher, national leader, etc., but some of my favorite pieces of her are relatively simple in scope. She can pull off effortless beauty in a way that few of the other ponies can--Catching sight of her in a piece like this puts a smile on my face in the same way as stepping outside on a beautiful morning and just drinking in the gentle sunlight and fresh air.

Not to accuse the princess of being impersonal! Celestia's serene "above it all" nature is part of her graceful charm.

Don't get me wrong, I love the style and it's a fantastic traditional piece (yay traditional!) but thematically I find fault. As much as I like both pieces, because of the nature of Luna's image in particular, I won't be able to favorite either of these images.

"Luna's nature to the MLP:FiM fandom"
Frightened...timid...confused...more childlike. Yes, the image does reflect it well. Luna's place in this fandom is a very ugly one. Or more accurately, the OC the fandom worships in the place of Luna.

"Celestia, the bringer of Light"
As much as I love dear Tia and refer to her as a bringer of light on occasion, i'm going to find fault with failing to address Luna and her importance as another bringer of light. If you're going to make a direct connection to the sun Celestia raises in giving her that title, then you're at fault for not including Luna, who raises the moon, and her contribution. Each controls what is the brightest object in the sky at their respective times, each ensure there is light. But, perhaps you're making a more abstract comparison to the harmony Celestia brings...in which case you're still forgetting Luna.

While it's nice that Celestia isn't being forgotten for once i'm not any happier when Luna is forgotten.

"Am I doing something harmful by comparing a fictional cartoon character princess to one of the most prolific modern artists ever known? Did I even capture the magic that Monet expressed every time he touched paint to a canvas? "
Lil Miss Jay (resident worst fandom member and furry clop artist) compared himself to Michelangelo. It was a big mistake and I sincerely hope everyone strongly disliked him for it (among other unsavory things).

But, that's not the same as trying resonate an established artists grandeur or compare another to an artist, so long as you don't have an ego (which is the main thing). So, no, you haven't done something wrong.

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but your best art won't come from duplication. Strive to find what resonates from your soul.

Regarding something ChiaroA said in his critique...
"I will give you a few tips: put more emphasis on the actual character (foreground) in the piece (or next works) and make the background recede."
Personally I found the emphasis to be acceptable and Celestia captivating, especially because of how the background has a smooth feel to it and almost blended quality. She also pops out and though the castle is a mild distraction, it does give the added benefit of making her appear closer. The tail grazing the ground especially helps this. As far as what I learned back in my days of photography, all things foreground/background/positioning/focus seem to be perfectly acceptable.

First, let me say thank you very much for reviewing and critiquing my attempt at Celestia. Truth be told, I posted this picture in order to find others who would be this brutal to my artwork for the sake of doing more with my art in the fandom. That being said, I must defend certain aspects of my twin pieces that you brought to light (especially one's made about Celestia's function in this piece).

I agree that Celestia's role as a Matriarchal Helios shouldn't be confused for the title of 'bringer of light', but it is a consistent label given to her; just as Monet would later be labeled 'the painter of light' by art historians. I'm sure that during Monet's time his label was that of 'impractical womanizer'. If anything, the first arguable painter of light is Leonardo for a quote found in one of his notebooks about his portraiture techniques. Contemporarily, the new 'painter of light' (not my opinion) is Thomas Kinkade. In MLP lore, the first bringers of light were every unicorn before Celestia and Luna assumed their royal mantles.

I never disassociated Luna as an important figure of light, and neither did my lack of mentioning her in the description. I was using these labels as a reflection of what I was attempting to convey about the fandom in my eyes; a global, optimistic, avant gard Art Movement. My decision to illustrate the two sisters in association with the two artists has been to reinforce this connection.

Again, I truely do appreciate what you have done today. Though you did not compliment my work with a :+fav:, you have provided me with what I was looking for when waiting to display Celestia with the critiques on; A work that created debate and conversation.

"Matriarchal Helios"
What a lovely combination of words. I don't hear helios enough.

"Celestia == Monet"
Perhaps I should've looked at it more from the angle of Monet and less from the angle of Celestia.

"I never disassociated Luna as an important figure of light, and neither did my lack of mentioning her in the description."
The first part is false but the second is true. Part of Luna's nature is going to be who she truly is, and by depicting her and Celestia in such different lights it depicts a contrast, making it all the more important to specify things like Luna also being a bringer of light.

"Though you did not compliment my work with a :+fav:"
Apologies, but if I enjoy an artist's depiction of one sister but not the other I probably won't favorite either. Especially not if Celestia's was the one that ended up better. Because Celestia generally ends up with the better art in the fandom i've ended up with more favorites for her than Luna, even with declining standards for Luna artwork. I am rather touched that you put the effort into the reply though, good actions go a long way.
